the premise of 'rab ne' is not impressive and i wasn't expecting too much. but, in the end, it turned out to be heartwarming tale of a middle aged, mild, clumsy, boring, unattractive middle-class man finding in his love. it made me smile because in mr. surinder sahni's triumph, i found mine...and i am sure everyone who is not blessed with godly looks smiled too.
'rab ne' makes you question love, "do only rich, charming, handsome men deserve beautiful women?" "is love only based on how we look from outside and not inside?". the only and probably most important thing that differentiates this film from others is that it is not 'a hero' who wins his love in the end.
shahrukh khan has always been known for his persona and stardom than his acting skills. but it is this film that shows us the evolution of him as an actor. he puts in his best performance after 'swades'. he potrays surinder sahni to perfection, from the punjabi accent to his body language, he gets everything right. sure, he hams up and overacts the role of the jat but you still cannot make out a single difference between the two. i almost believed he was a method actor after watching this film. its the emotional scenes, he deserves special praise for...he delivers every line with a heart-wrenching and superb expressions. i have to say he is the best in the industry when it comes to emotional scenes. his comic timing has always been excellent and this film is no exception.
anushkha sharma delivers a fine performance as the wife and is fortunately well cast. she handles serious scenes with maturity and i could not believe this was her first film. vinay pathak is brilliant as usual and his chemistry with srk is very good.
adi chopra handles a fragile and an implausible storyline very well, which itself is an achievement. every dialogue of the film is perfectly placed, so are the lyrics of the songs.
the film does have short-comings, like the part where you feel that the wife not being able to recognise her husband after a makeover (although srk almost makes us believe it), the pace of the second half which lags behind, the unnecessary shots of amritsar and the songs of the gurudwara.
in all, 'rab ne' is a beautiful and touching tale which is a little too long. it made me smile and i am sure you will too.

as usual, couldnt agree more :)) sure d movie has its flaws, including a weak storyline..however it manages to hold ure attention n entertain u for a long duration of over 160 minutes..adi chopra's direction n srk's performance is truly commendable, certainly a treat 4 all his fans :)
I totally agree with the review..! Its been a long while since such cinema has entered my brains.. Wonderful!
The beginning of the film was a blast from the past for me(being born in Amristar)..stunning images of punjab.. the golden temple.. halwaais singing punjabi folk by chamkila!.. gol gappa wala washing his stall with pipe water..the trucks..patli galiz.. evrything is SO well handled..!! also! the movie is VERYY well researched.. from accents (1st movie where srk's accent is flawless at all times..esp the scene when he's the nerd and looking at his reflection on the back of a katori and says - "kidddaaaan!" .. Well!me and my punjabi friend's had a great laugh (the mangalorean kannad people beside us thot we were crazy!)... minor details such as when surinder writes down his mobile numbr on a piece of paper fr taani.. its 98766--smthin .. which is actually a punjab based airtel number!! may sound silly but film makers usually miss out this kinda stuff... then the flirting scene.. anushka is too good.. it felt like the time when i was once shooed away !!
The double role was NOT scripted realistically... and that the "dude" part of srk was too good to be possibly executed by the shy and fragile surinder.. but that said- i also thought that this film had a very firm foundation. It's a very honest film. From my personal experiences and knowing the mentality and conservativeness of firm-rooted traditional punjabi girls..and the families they belong to, i reckon that the film starts off on a very realistic note.. everything totally makes sense. the "nerdy" surinder is wonderfully portrayed..the stuttering.. the shy glances and confusion-all A1! Anushka did GREAT in the first pre-marriage scene.. unexpected for a first timer! the best part about her being the fact that in not a single scene in the movie she looks intimidated by shahrukh and the star he is..She is her own person. i think the film gets a lil slow in the second part of the 1st half... but from after the interval till the end its brilliant! the changing room scene.. look at taani's eyes when she tells abt what a girl really needs.. deep! then when shez angry/confused/frustrated and works her ass off around the house.. washing clothes.. washing the already washed dishes! .. great direction..
i think the "i love you" scene was a lil too extreme on the fantasy for such a realistic movie till then.. hard to digest.. but i guess it was needed to show the madness!! but it sorta pissed me off when she saw that i love u lit city on posters and paintings at the punjab power carnival watever.. vinay pathak is brilliant as usual.. great actor! the climax is greatly done..!!
and THE CREDIT-SIDE SHOW IS HILARIOUS!!.. japaani chadi .. hindustani kiss!!
watch it with a loved one..
